The Tripura state committee of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) announced on Monday that it will participate in the nationwide ‘Corporate Quit India’ movement on August 9. This protest aims to address issues related to the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and loan waivers.
At a press conference in Agartala, Pabitra Kar, a leader of the Left farmers’ body and former minister, explained that the movement, decided by the national council of SKM on July 10, will resume agitations demanding the implementation of the December 9, 2021 agreement with the Union government. The protest will also focus on other key demands affecting farmers’ livelihoods.
Kar noted that the farmers’ body in Tripura, along with counterparts nationwide, will submit an updated charter of demands to the state’s MPs. These demands include a legally guaranteed MSP at C2+50% for all crops with procurement, a comprehensive loan waiver to free farmers and agricultural workers from debt, measures to prevent farm suicides and distress migration, and a halt to the privatization of the power sector and the implementation of prepaid smart meters.
“The National Conference of SKM held on July 10 in New Delhi assessed the post-election scenario. We believe the Union Government must understand that the ruling alliance lost 38 rural seats in five states with strong farmers’ movements. Overall, it lost 159 seats in rural India. This outcome reflects the chronic agrarian crisis and emphasizes the need for major changes in agrarian policies,” Kar told reporters.
He further criticized the then NDA-2 Government for violating the December 9, 2021 agreement, which included demands for a remunerative and guaranteed MSP, a comprehensive loan waiver, and the repeal of electricity privatization.
