Amid an unprecedented heatwave in the national capital over the last two weeks, people in different parts of Delhi are grappling with an acute shortage of water. Several areas in the city have little to no water supply, forcing people to rely on water tankers and borewells. The affected areas include Sangam Vihar, Mehrauli, Vasant Vihar, Okhla, Vasant Kunj, Chanakyapuri, Narela, Rohini, Uttam Nagar, Janakpuri, Vikas Puri, Moti Nagar, Patel Nagar, Chhatarpur, Karawal Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Geeta Colony, Krishna Nagar, and Shahdara.  Water scarcity in the capital is caused by lower water levels in the Yamuna River and technical issues at important water treatment plants.

The water shortage has also led to protests and political confrontations. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has accused Haryana of not releasing Delhi’s share of water. Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh today accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of causing the crisis, alleging that the BJP-led Haryana government has ignored repeated requests for water. BJP on the other hand has blamed the Delhi Government for making Delhiites victims of politics. Delhi BJP President  Virendra Sachdeva yesterday accused CM Arvind Kejriwal of failing to deliver on his promise of  24-hour free water supply, leaving residents struggling for every drop.
