Chennai: Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast is preparing to open its first manufacturing facility in India to produce batteries, media reported.
The plant, located in Thoothukudi city in Tamil Nadu, will produce batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), Reuters reported citing sources.
This project is distinct from VinFasts previously announced plans to assemble vehicles from Vietnam-sourced parts.
While the company, a competitor to Tesla and Chinas BYD, declined to comment, an official announcement on the new facility is expected soon, the report said.
According to the Reuters report, VinFast has indicated that it will disclose detailed plans at an appropriate time.
A senior official involved in the matter noted that several VinFast representatives have visited Thoothukudi district to assess potential sites.
According to a report in September, VinFast was making efforts to recruit for various roles in India.
Key details, including the size of the investment and the operational commencement date of the VinFast factory in Tamil Nadu, are still not known, said the report.
