A dramatic narcotics case unfolded at Belonia Railway Station after an accused cannabis trafficker allegedly escaped from GRP custody following a major seizure. During the subsequent investigation, GRP constable Jatindra Das was arrested after cannabis was reportedly recovered from his room, raising serious questions about police accountability.

A major narcotics case in South Tripura has taken a dramatic turn after a Government Railway Police (GRP) constable was arrested during an investigation into the alleged escape of a detained cannabis trafficker from police custody at Belonia Railway Station.

The incident began on Tuesday when police intercepted a white vehicle bearing registration number TR07G02267 within the premises of Belonia Railway Station. Acting on specific inputs, security personnel conducted a search of the vehicle and reportedly recovered several kilograms of cannabis concealed inside a bag.

According to sources, four individuals were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the operation. However, as police carried out the search and seizure process, three of the occupants allegedly managed to flee from the scene. One individual was detained in connection with the contraband recovery and was subsequently taken to the GRP police station for further interrogation.

The case took an unexpected turn when the detained suspect allegedly escaped from police custody. Sources claimed that the accused managed to flee despite being accompanied by a police officer and an Intelligence Bureau personnel. Allegations have also surfaced that no immediate preventive action was taken to stop the suspect from escaping.

The dramatic escape was reportedly witnessed by several local auto-rickshaw drivers operating near Belonia Railway Station. Some of them allegedly recorded videos showing the detainee running through uneven terrain in an apparent attempt to evade law enforcement authorities. The footage quickly circulated on social media platforms and soon went viral, drawing widespread public attention.

Several media outlets also reported on the incident. However, the authenticity of the viral video could not be independently verified.

Following reports of the escape, senior GRP officials from Agartala rushed to Belonia and launched an internal inquiry to determine how the detainee managed to flee from custody. The investigation focused on the actions of police personnel involved in the seizure operation and the subsequent handling of the accused.

During the course of the inquiry, investigators reportedly conducted searches and questioned several individuals connected to the case. Sources revealed that cannabis was allegedly recovered from the room of GRP constable Jatindra Das. Investigators suspect that the substance found in his possession may have been linked to the narcotics seized during the railway station operation.

Based on the recovery, Das was arrested and formally booked in connection with the ongoing investigation. After the completion of legal formalities, the GRP investigating officer produced the arrested constable before a court on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials have not yet disclosed the exact quantity of cannabis recovered from the constable’s room. Authorities have also refrained from confirming whether the seized substance was directly connected to the narcotics recovered from the vehicle at Belonia Railway Station.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the detainee’s escape and are examining possible links between the arrested constable, the seized contraband, and other individuals involved in the case.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to question additional suspects as part of efforts to uncover the full extent of the alleged narcotics network. Notably, no official statement had been issued by the GRP regarding the matter at the time this report was filed.

Legal proceedings in the case are continuing, and according to the prosecutor, both sentences related to the matter will run concurrently.
