The second day of the assembly sitting witnessed uproarious scene over the 10, 323 teachers issue.
The terminated teachers organized an Assembly Cholo Abhiyan on Monday. They were prevented in front of Circuit House by the police and security personnel who put up a strong barricade. The teachers, however, tried to break through the barricade which resulted in wild scuffle with the police personnel and TSR jawans. As the teachers turned uncontrollable and the barricade seemed to on the verge of breaking, police resorted to water cannon burst. As the water cannon opened up many a teacher were severely hit and fell on the ground sustaining mild injuries.
However, the water cannon also failed to contained the teachers who kept on pushing with all might and from all directions and the situation turned volatile. It was then police ordered lathi charge to disperse the swelling crowd. In the lathi charge some of the teachers were injured. They were then taken to GB hospital.
In the meantime, the issue was also raised in the Assembly and the opposition protested the police action . Even opposition leader and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also took part in the discussion.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha however strongly backed the police action and said that the government was always willing to find out a way for the terminated teachers’ employment by way of discussions.
“Their job was terminated by the Supreme Court and we cannot overrule it. Nevertheless, we are always for their employment and wanted discussions. You ( opposition) can also extend your helping hand in this raegard. But we cannot allow them to march to the assembly when the House is in session. Don not blame the police”, said Dr Saha.
